ʾAsmaʾ-e-Maryam

Narrated Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal that Hazrat ibn `Abbas said,
The Messenger of Allah drew four lines on the ground and asked,
"Do you know what these lines represent?"
They answered, "Allah and His Messenger know best."
He said, "The best among the women of the Garden are Khadijah binte Khuwaylid, Fatimah binte Muhammad, Maryam binte `Imran and Asiyah binte Muzahim."

The following are the titles bestowed unto Lady Mary in Islamic tradition. According to the Prophetic Narrations of Muhammad, Hazrat Mary is one of the foremost of the women of Paradise.

Qanitah

The Arabic term implies the meaning not only of constant submission to Allah but also absorption in prayer and invocation, meanings that coincide with the image of Mary spending her childhood in the mihrab. In this way, Mary personifies prayer and contemplation in Islam.

And Mary, the daughter of Amram, who guarded her chastity, We breathed into her of Our Spirit, and she testified to the Truth of the Words of her Lord and of His Revelations, and was one of the devout.
[Quran 66:12]

Siddiqah

Mother Mary is called ‘Siddiqah’ twice in the Qur’an. It means ‘one who testifies to the truth’ or ‘a person of the truth’. The term has also been translated as ‘She who believes sincerely and totally.’

Christ, the son of Mary was no more than a Messenger, many were the Messengers that passed away before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They had both to eat their food. See how Allah doth makes His Signs clear to them; yet see in what ways they are deluded away from the truth!
[Quran 5:75]

And Mary, the daughter of Amram, who guarded her chastity, We breathed into her of Our Spirit, and she testified to the truth of the Words of her Lord and of His Revelations, and was one of the devout.
[Quran 66:12]

Sajida

It means ‘she who prostrates’. The prostration that Muslims do in their daily prayers is the prostration that Mary did: hands, knees and forehead touching the ground together.

"O Mary! Worship thy Lord devoutly; prostrate thyself and bow down with those who bow down."
[Quran 3:43]

Raki’a

Translated as ‘she who bows down in worship’. According to Islam, the command was repeated by angels only to Mary. The bowing down in the daily ritual prayers, known as ruku', has been derived from Mary's practice.

"O Mary! Worship thy Lord devoutly; prostrate thyself and bow down with those who bow down."
[Quran 3:43]

Tahira

Meaning ‘she who is pure.’ According to a hadith recorded by Imam an-Nisa’i, Satan could not touch Mary when she was born, therefore she did not cry.

Behold! The angels said: "O Mary! Allah hath chosen thee and purified thee: chosen thee above women of all nations."
[Quran 3:42]

Mustafia

It means ‘she who was Chosen.’ Allah chose the virgin in herself and for herself, and He chose her in regard to the world and for a Divine Plan.

Behold! The angels said: "O Mary! Allah hath chosen thee and purified thee: chosen thee above women of all nations."
[Quran 3:42]

Sa’ima

It means ‘she who fasts.’ Mary is reported to have fasted one half of every year in Islamic tradition.

"So eat, drink and cool thine eye. And if thou dost see any man, say to them `I have vowed a fast to the Most Gracious, and this day will I enter into no talk with any human being.'"
[Quran 19:26]

Batoul Adhraa al-Marhuma

Translates to ‘the Ascetic Virgin Enveloped in God's Mercy.’ This title is an amalgamation of three different ones mentioned in the ahadith. May Allah subhana wa ta'ala grant peace upon our Lady Mary. Ameen.
